Discounts that keep changing

Posted on 23 June 2009 by admin

TAN feels she is being misled by a car dealer, claiming that the discounts offered keep changing for the new car she’s buying.

She recently booked a Hyundai i10 from Sunrise Greeview Sdn Bhd in Taiping, Perak, and was offered a RM3,600 discount.

A few days later — after she had made the RM5,300 downpayment, signed the car loan agreement and even bought her number plate from the Road Transport Department — she claims to have been told the car she had booked was not available.

She claims the sales assistant then offered her a 2008 completely built up (CBU) model instead, with fewer features than the model she had wanted.

Worse, the discount was reduced by half to RM1,800! “I asked a friend at the Hyundai headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and was told I could actually get a higher discount for the 2008 CBU car,” TAN claims.

A few days later, she got a call from the sales staff that they had secured the 2008 CBU car and the discount was now higher at RM2,888 plus the extra features that matched her first order.

TAN wonders why the offer keeps changing and wants to know if the sales agent had been trying to get her to accept a lesser offer by stating there was no stock available for her first order.

“If they cannot give me a higher discount, they could have just told me so.

Why wait until after I had settled all my payments and made all the necessary arrangements, and only then tell me I have to pay more and they do not have the car that I want?” she asks.

● A SUNRISE Greenview Sdn Bhd spokesman says there was a misunderstanding over the two differing CBU and completely knocked down (CKD) car models.

“There were two sets of discounts for the different models and hence the confusion,” the spokesman explains.
She says TAN has been contacted and the customer has accepted the explanation given by the company.

The spokesman adds TAN was given the requested discount. TAN confirms she was met by staff of the company and she will be getting her car soon, and that she is satisfied with the explanation given.
