Anticipation high for by-election

VISITORS hoping to head to Taiping for a quiet holiday these coming weeks may find their stay in the ‘Town of Everlasting Peace’ not so peaceful after all.

Not only is it school term holiday season but excitement has also been stirred up by the upcoming Bukit Gantang by-election, of which the nomination day and polling day are set on March 29 and April 7 respectively.

A front counter worker at Hotel Seri Malaysia located at the fringe of the scenic Taiping Lake Garden said the hotel was recording a 100% occupancy rate from March 14 to March 21.

“From March 28 until April 4, all of our 51 rooms are fully booked too,” he said.

Panorama, a 79-room hotel located on Jalan Kota in the heart of the town, is also fully booked throughout both the school term holiday season and the run-up to the by-election.

At SSL Traders, a new 120-room hotel in Jalan Medan Perwira, Kamunting, there are still a few more rooms during the school term holidays but it is fully booked for the run-up for the by-election.

“We are experiencing an 80% occupancy rate now but all rooms are fully booked from March 28 to April 8,” said a receptionist who declined to be named.

Also fully booked are the 88-room Legend Inn on Jalan Masjid which is popular with visiting VIPs, ministers and elected representatives, and the 88-room Meridian Hotel on Jalan Kota.

However, visitors need not fear having to sleep in their cars as about 30km from Taiping, along the North-South Expressway, is the Bukit Merah Laketown Resort which is offering plenty of rooms.
